Before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, the Service Module -- with its large rocket engine and nearly empty tanks of fuel and consumables --- is jettisoned. Only the Command Module (CM), a cone appx. 13 feet in diameter at the largest point, can survive the fiery plunge through the atmosphere.
